You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

This article is part of Her Guide to Life, a Bom Bom Girl series on what it takes to thrive as a girl or young woman today.

Everyone seems to have a plan. The girl from school who already knows her major. The friend with the five-year business plan. The influencer who “manifested” her dream life by 22. Meanwhile, you’re still figuring out what you even like. Take a breath. That’s normal, and it’s not a sign you’re behind.

The Comparison Trap Is Rigged

When you scroll, you’re comparing your everyday life to someone else’s best moments, edited, filtered and posted on purpose. You never see the rejections, the doubts or the months where nothing worked. It’s not a fair fight, so stop entering it.

A simple rule helps: compare yourself only to who you were six months ago. Are you a little wiser, a little braver, a little more skilled? That’s the only scoreboard that matters.

Pressure Comes From Everywhere

Family wants one thing. Friends want another. Social media sells a third. Some of that pressure comes from love, and some comes from people projecting their own fears onto you. You can respect the people who care about you and still make your own choices.

Try saying it out loud: “I hear you, and I’m still deciding.” It’s honest, it’s respectful, and it buys you the time you need.

Define Success for Yourself

Success is not one-size-fits-all. For one person it’s a corner office. For another it’s owning a small shop, raising a family, traveling, creating art or simply waking up without dread. Ask yourself:

  • When do I feel most like myself?
  • What kind of days do I want more of?
  • Who do I admire, and what exactly do I admire about them?

Your answers are clues. They don’t have to add up to a career title yet.

Direction Beats a Perfect Plan

You don’t need a 10-year roadmap. You need a next step. Take a class that sounds interesting. Shadow someone at a job you’re curious about. Start the small project. Every step gives you information, and information is what turns confusion into clarity.

Changing your mind isn’t failing, either. It’s learning. Plenty of successful women started in completely different fields from where they ended up.

Three Things to Try This Week

  1. Mute or unfollow three accounts that consistently make you feel “behind.”
  2. Write your own definition of success in one or two sentences. Keep it private if you want.
  3. Pick one small “next step” toward something you’re curious about, and do it before Sunday.
