Becoming Her: Building Confidence Without Anyone’s Approval

This article is part of Her Guide to Life, a Bom Bom Girl series on what it takes to thrive as a girl or young woman today.

Confidence is not something you’re born with, and it doesn’t come from a perfect outfit or a stack of likes. It’s a skill. Like any skill, you build it through practice, small wins, and choosing to keep going when you feel unsure. The good news is that you don’t need anyone’s permission to start.

What Confidence Actually Is

Many girls think confidence means never feeling nervous. It doesn’t. Confident people feel doubt too. The difference is that they don’t let the doubt make every decision for them. Confidence is trusting yourself enough to try, knowing you’ll handle whatever happens next.

It also isn’t the same as being loud. Some of the most confident people you’ll meet are quiet. They know what they value, they listen more than they talk, and they don’t need to prove themselves in every room.

Stop Waiting for Approval

If you need a parent, a friend, a teacher or a follower count to tell you you’re good enough, your confidence will always be on loan. Approval can be taken back. Self-respect can’t.

Start noticing how often you ask for reassurance before doing something. “Does this look okay?” “Was that dumb?” “Should I post this?” Asking for advice is healthy. Needing a yes before you can feel okay is the habit worth breaking.

Find Your Voice, One Sentence at a Time

Your voice grows when you use it. Try these small steps:

  • Share one opinion a day. In class, at work, at dinner. It doesn’t have to be big. “I actually liked that movie” counts.
  • Drop the automatic apology. Replace “Sorry, but…” with “I think…” You’re not interrupting by having a thought.
  • Ask the question. If you’re confused, someone else probably is too.

Handling Criticism Without Losing Yourself

Criticism will come. Some of it will be useful, and some of it will just be noise. Before you react, ask two questions: Does this person know what they’re talking about? and Is there anything true here I can use?

If the answer is yes, take the lesson and leave the sting. If the answer is no, you’re allowed to let it go. Not every opinion deserves space in your head, especially from people who wouldn’t come to you for advice.

Keep Your Own Receipts

Confidence grows from evidence. Keep a running list on your phone of things you’ve done that took courage: the presentation you gave, the hard conversation you had, the skill you finally learned. On days you doubt yourself, read it. You’ve already done hard things. That’s proof, not hype.

Style Can Help, But It’s Not the Foundation

Wearing something that makes you feel like yourself can absolutely give you a lift. That’s part of why we started Bom Bom Girl. But real confidence is what’s still there on a sweatpants day. Let your style express who you are, not decide it.

Three Things to Try This Week

  1. Write down three things you’ve done that you’re proud of, and keep the list somewhere you’ll see it.
  2. Make one decision this week (big or small) without asking anyone else first.
  3. Catch yourself saying “sorry” when you haven’t done anything wrong, and replace it with “thank you” or simply say what you mean.
