Choose Your Circle: Friendships That Help You Grow

This article is part of Her Guide to Life, a Bom Bom Girl series on what it takes to thrive as a girl or young woman today.

You’ve probably heard that you become like the people you spend the most time with. It’s not a perfect rule, but there’s truth in it. Your friends shape your habits, your confidence and even your goals. Choosing your circle carefully isn’t being picky. It’s taking your life seriously.

What a Good Friend Looks Like

  • She’s happy for you when good things happen, not quietly competitive.
  • She keeps your secrets and doesn’t talk about you behind your back.
  • She can disagree with you without making it ugly.
  • She shows up when things are hard, not just when they’re fun.
  • You feel more like yourself around her, not less.

Signs a Friendship Is Holding You Back

Every friendship has rough patches. But some patterns are worth paying attention to: constant drama, jokes that always seem to land at your expense, pressure to do things you’re not comfortable with, or feeling drained after every hangout. If you’re always the one giving and never the one receiving, that’s a sign too.

Handling Peer Pressure

Peer pressure doesn’t always look like someone daring you. Often it’s quieter: everyone’s doing it, you don’t want to be left out, you don’t want to seem boring. A few lines that help:

  • “Nah, I’m good.”
  • “Not my thing, but you do you.”
  • “I’ve got an early morning.” (Sometimes an easy exit is the smart move.)

Real friends won’t drop you for saying no. If they do, they’ve shown you something important.

Letting Friendships Change

Not every friendship is meant to last forever, and that’s okay. People grow in different directions. You can step back from a friendship with kindness: spend less time together, be honest if asked, and skip the public drama. You don’t have to burn a bridge to walk away from it.

Be the Friend You Want

The fastest way to find good friends is to be one. Check in on people. Celebrate their wins. Keep your word. Invite the new girl. Good people tend to find each other.

Three Things to Try This Week

  1. Think about who you feel best around, and make a plan to spend time with that person.
  2. Send a message to a friend celebrating something she did well.
  3. Notice one relationship that leaves you drained, and decide on one small boundary for it.
