This article is part of Her Guide to Life, a Bom Bom Girl series on what it takes to thrive as a girl or young woman today.
You don’t have to wait until you’re older, richer or more experienced to make a difference. Some of the biggest changes in history were started by young women who simply decided that something mattered enough to act on. Your voice counts now, not someday.
Start With What You Care About
What makes you angry, excited or hopeful? Animals, the environment, fashion, music, your neighborhood, girls’ education, mental health? Passion is fuel. When you work on something you care about, you’ll keep going after the excitement fades.
Leadership Isn’t a Title
You don’t need to be class president or team captain to lead. Leadership looks like organizing a study group, speaking up when someone is being treated unfairly, starting a club, or being the one who follows through. People notice who gets things done.
Turn Ideas Into Projects
Big goals feel overwhelming until you break them into steps. Try this simple plan:
- Name the goal. “Start a clothing swap at my school” is clearer than “help the planet.”
- List the first three steps. Who to ask, what you need, when it could happen.
- Find one partner. Projects are easier and more fun with a teammate.
- Set a date. A deadline turns an idea into a plan.
Use Your Creativity
Art, writing, design, photography, video and music are powerful ways to share a message. A great poster, a short video or an honest blog post can reach people a speech never would. Make things, share them and let your style be part of your voice.
Show Up in Your Community
Volunteering, joining local events, supporting small businesses and helping neighbors all build real connections. They also build your skills, your confidence and your resume. Start local. The impact you have on the people around you is real impact.
Expect Setbacks
Not every idea will work, and not everyone will support you. That’s part of it. Each attempt teaches you something for the next one. The women you admire most all have a list of things that didn’t work. They just kept going.
Three Things to Try This Week
- Write down one issue or cause you care about and why.
- Find one local group, event or volunteer opportunity connected to it.
- Share something you created, a post, drawing, idea or video, that says what you believe.
